Youth Apprenticeship Experience in Manufacturing
-
The Problem
The Youth Apprentice program at Northcentral Technical College (NTC) faced challenges in showcasing the diverse opportunities available to students and the real-world experiences they gain in various fields, including welding and fabrication. Many potential students were unaware of the benefits and growth opportunities that come with participating in the program, particularly for women in trades. There was a need to highlight genuine student experiences to attract more participants and dispel misconceptions about the capabilities of women in traditionally male-dominated industries. The program aimed to tell these stories effectively to inspire others to engage and consider pursuing similar career paths.

The Approach
The approach centered on creating a compelling video that captured the journey of a young woman working in her father’s welding and fabrication business through the Youth Apprentice program. The narrative emphasized her development in skills and confidence, showcasing her hands-on experience with welding and fabrication tasks. Interviews with both the apprentice and her father illustrated their collaborative learning process, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and the evolving goals within their family business. This storytelling sought to challenge stereotypes about women in welding, highlighting their contributions and potential to excel in the field.

The Results
The final video effectively conveyed the apprentice's experience and the impact of the Youth Apprentice program. It now resides on a landing page for NTC, featuring alongside other success stories, and is shared on YouTube. Additionally, the video is shown during school presentations by the Youth Apprentice staff, serving as a motivational tool for students considering their career paths. By showcasing authentic experiences and success stories, the video has helped raise awareness about the program, inspiring more young individuals to explore opportunities in trades like welding and fabrication.
